Jack London Square is named author Jack London who wrote more than 50 novels including “White Fang” and “Call of the Wild.” As a young boy, Jack London sold newspapers along the waterfront to sailors and later befriended Johnny Heinold, the owner of the Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon. Many of Jack’s experiences of growing up along the oyster beds of Oakland’s estuary shoreline are recounted in his various works. The African American Museum and Library serves to preserve, interpret and share the experiences influences of African Americans in California and the West.
