USS Hornet Legacy. The USS Hornet (CV–12) was christened in 1943 and went on to mark Naval history with decades of victories. During WWII, the USS Hornet was under air attacks 59 times and was never stuck. She supported nearly every amphibious military landing after 1944, was instrumental in sinking the super battleship Yamato. The USS Hornet launched the first air strikes on Tokyo since the infamous 1942 Doolittle Raid. She is one of only nine carriers that have received the Presidential Unit Citation for her contribution to WWII. In 1969, the ship recovered Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronauts. The USS Hornet was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991 and a State Historic Landmark in 1999. [Top]
