Facets of Alameda: The JAM at Neptune Beach
On Saturday and Sunday, June 20th and 21st, West Alameda will come together to remember the city’s rich and colorful history at The Jam at Neptune Beach, which is a fun street festival with entertainment for the whole family, located on Webster Street, between Pacific Avenue and Central Avenue in Alameda, CA. Organized by the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, the fair starts at 10 AM on Saturday and 10:30 AM on Sunday, and ends at 5:30 PM both days. The decade-old tradition celebrates the memory of what once was Neptune Beach, a popular Alameda amusement park once known as the “Coney Island of the West.”
Today, the average person at Crab Cove would not be aware of the bustling amusement park that took over the now-calm beach. Neptune Beach featured the typical elements of amusement parks -- Olympic-size swimming pools, roller coasters, a carousel, and a Ferris Wheel. It attracted many celebrities, such as Johny Weismuller from the original Tarzan. Neptune Beach was also a cultural hotspot of the Bay Area, a place where residents could catch up and slow down. Dancers partied on Friday and Saturday nights at the clubhouse and families enjoyed each other’s presence at picnics around the barbecue pits.
The JAM at Neptune Beach is an opportunity to celebrate the old and new Alameda. Though the park was only open until 1939, when it closed because of the Great Depression, "car culture," and fare circumvention, its summer spirit lives on. This upcoming weekend, festival-goers are welcome to let their hair down and enjoy the many features of the street fair, which include a zip line, a Ferris Wheel, live music, food trucks, local art, and more.
